CyberKnife® Treatment

Cyberknife is a breakthrough technology for the treatment of prostate cancer. It offers patients a highly precise, non-invasive, and effective option for treating their disease. The ability to target tumors with unprecedented precision while minimizing damage to healthy tissue has made Cyberknife a leading choice in cancer treatment, giving prostate cancer patients around the world hope and improved outcomes.

Image-Guided Precision

Images such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used to create a detailed 3D map of the patient’s prostate and surrounding structures. The Cyberknife System uses this information to precisely locate the tumor and account for possible movement of the organ during treatment.

Robotic Accuracy

Cyberknife is equipped with a sophisticated robotic arm that can move quickly and rotate around the patient. This robotic arm allows the beams to be delivered from different angles and adapt in real-time to any movement detected during the procedure. As a result, the radiation is dosed with sub-millimeter accuracy, ensuring minimal impact on healthy tissue.

Non-Invasive Nature

One of the main advantages of Cyberknife is its non-invasive approach. Unlike traditional surgery, which requires incisions and tissue removal, Cyberknife treatment is exclusively external. This means that patients experience minimal discomfort, recovery time is shorter and there is less risk of infection or complications.

Personalized Treatment Plans

Each patient’s prostate cancer is unique, and the Cyberknife System allows for tailored treatment plans based on individual characteristics and tumor size. This personalized approach ensures that patients receive the most effective and targeted therapy for their specific disease.

Quality Over Quantity

How does the treatment of prostate cancer with CyberKnife® normally proceed?

1. Appointment with the doctor

The physician will discuss treatment options with you and determine if CyberKnife® is appropriate for you. He will also explain the CyberKnife® treatment procedure and answer your questions.

Ask for advice

2. Goldmarker

If necessary, four small, rice grain-sized gold markers will be placed either in the tumor or in the immediate area surrounding the tumor. These markers help the physician track the tumor during treatment.

3. Making a mold for the treatment

If you are treated in the head or neck area with CyberKnife®, you will receive a personalized mold or mask. This mask will help keep your head relaxed during treatment.

4. Imaging

CT (computed tomography) imaging is required to plan your CyberKnife® treatment. Other imaging modalities such as MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or vascular imaging (angiography) may also be used to accurately locate the tumor.

5. Planning the CyberKnife® treatment

The hospital physicist in the Department of Radiation Oncology, in collaboration with the attending radiologist or neurosurgeon, creates an individualized radiation treatment plan. In this plan, the exact position and the radiation dose with which the tumor is to be irradiated are determined.

6. Treatment

Treatment with CyberKnife® is usually performed on an outpatient basis. You will be positioned on the treatment table in the same position you were when you were examined at CT. The CyberKnife® robot then irradiates the tumor. The treatment usually takes about 45 minutes.

7. Timetable for the treatment

The number of treatment sessions depends on the size and location of the tumor. However, most patients will receive 1 to 6 treatments. Treatment is usually given every business day or every other business day.

8. Side effects

The side effects of CyberKnife® are usually less severe than those of conventional radiation therapy to the same treatment site. However, some side effects may occur, such as fatigue, problems with urination, and bowel problems. Your doctor will discuss these side effects with you before you start treatment.

9. Follow-up care

Your doctor will see you for regular follow-up appointments after treatment. These appointments are to monitor your progress and make sure the treatment was successful.
